Chicago, IL

A city that lures you in with iconic deep dish pizza, the legendary charm of Wrigley Field and the shiny reflection of The Bean steps away from the lively energy of Navy Pier can only be the classic American city of Chicago. This popular destination is where culture, flavor and history bursts at the seams and accumulates 55 million visitors each year on average, making it a city people can easily add on and check off their bucket list. However, Chicago has more to offer for the traveler seeking out unique adventure in an easily accessible city.

Visitors weaving the city streets on a warm August day may be startled by rumblings that resemble a mighty dragon’s roar. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? In the case of the mysterious objects soaring in the air, it is both. The Thunderbirds are a red, white and blue USAF Air Demonstration Squadron that present themselves on Aug 15-17 in Chicago every other year as they switch off with Blue Angels–the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron.

Witnessing the Thunderbirds soar across the sky is truly an otherworldly experience all can enjoy. The beat of your heart will match the one the Thunderbirds draw in the sky as they flip through the air. Rumblings will be heard from all directions, your senses losing the fight against the powerful timber of the engines. With the capability to move twice the speed of sound, a blast of engines may be heard to your left while the jet is already over to your right. The way the pilots join in aerobatic formation from solo flying makes it seem like the pilot and jet are one entity, seamlessly moving across the sky with no friction to stop them.

While there are many Air & Water Shows across the country, the one in Chicago is an extremely special occurrence. The Lake Michigan shoreline paired with the city skyline is an impressive landscape for the aircrafts, boats and parachutes to perform aerial displays and stunts. Parking yourself on the shoreline provides a full view of the performance while taking advantage of family and friends’ rooftops allows for an up close and personal look at the mighty Thunderbirds. I personally got an amazing look at one of the fighter jet’s undercarriages as it zoomed right over my head. There are many VIP options as well for a viewing experience–many of which include all you can eat and drink. If you do not have any relatives living in the city, the stands in Wrigley Field open the opportunity for special views right as the classic Cubs hit another home run.

The Chicago Air & Water Show is a way for you to travel to an iconic city with a hint of something special along the way. The experience is full of honor and amazement for the steadfast Air Force and Navy pilots serving the United States. While you see the jets flipping through the air, it is hard to remember that there are pilots behind the gears that we do not see. To gain a full intellectual and emotional understanding of what these pilots go through, I suggest watching Air Force Elite: Thunderbirds on Netflix.
