Everything moves forward, a natural system that leaves us yearning for time gone by. But what if there were places that are stuck in time with its charm and majestic essence? Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a hilltop commune with its medieval beauty and artistic history forever held in place by its strong stone exteriors.
Saint-Paul-de-Vence has a lot to offer, including being a perfect day trip from Nice as it has easy access from the popular tourist destination due to its small size and 40 minute drive. The town is an artistic hub, both modern-day and historic artists and writers flocking to the location for its calming atmosphere and stunning views. This means your feet will step on the same cobblestones as many different artists had back in the day such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, James Baldwin and Jean-Paul Sartre. In fact, the small town holds one of the most famous Airbnb’s in the world, an impressive stone cottage hugged by vibrant green leaves that once belonged to French poet and screenwriter Jacques Prévert.
In terms of what else one may see in this charming village, the gorgeous Grande Fountain continues to be the central meeting point for tourists and locals alike just as it was for those in past centuries. From this point, you can decide to go any which way without mistake–every corner and staircase leads you to discover a new pocket of charm.
A visit to Saint-Paul-de-Vence invites one to embrace the slower, more intentional pace of life–one that allows you to truly savor each moment. Picture yourself enjoying the peaceful ambiance while sipping wine at a rustic wooden table housed under a delicate lace umbrella. Imagine stumbling upon the bocce ball court and proceeding to challenge friends and family to a match. Simply turning your head will place La Colombe d’Or in sight. This famous restaurant is home to work from artists like Picasso and Matisse, who exchanged their talents for food and lodging.
Wander the winding stone streets to find the hundred different ways to experience Saint-Paul-de-Vence through the eyes of others, whether that be through the numerous art galleries or the thoughtfully curated shops. But perhaps the best view of them all is the one you witness through your own eyes. Do not be deterred by the encompassing stone borders and hoist yourself up onto the wall walkway to see the sweeping panoramic view where the rolling hills of the French countryside meet the sparkling coastline of the French riviera. This is a moment of awe, one that is entirely yours.
Truthfully, the entire visit to Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a moment full of awe and inspiration, so I will not say anymore about the magical place as visitors should experience the simple surprises firsthand. I personally stumbled upon this location by accident while following the whim of my wine tour guide. From the base of the hill to the entrance of the village walls, I gained a sense of excitement and curiosity for what I might uncover in this secluded place. I felt as if I had mined the perfect diamond in the rough, which goes to show how hidden gems are meant to surprise you.
